Reason Why You Should Use Direct Statements To Your Kids

If you want to get a firm and clear outcome for the things that you say to your kids, then you should also be firm and clear with your kids. Telling your kids clear and direct statements will let them understand that you are serious about what you are trying to say.

It is expected that kids will not agree with everything that you tell them; that’s normal. However, that is not an excuse for you to ignore that reaction. Instead, you should pay attention to his resistance and take it as an opportunity to let him feel accountable. Do not ignore his reactions, but tell him what it is exactly that you want and when you want it to be done.

Expect your child to be agitated about it, but answer him with a clear and firm tone that there are rules that he needs to follow, or else there are consequences.

After giving clear and direct instructions to your child, walk away. This is very effective if you are trying to reprimand your child. When you tell him that what he did was wrong, always be firm and show no sign of leniency. If you show him your lack of confidence, he will not take you and your instructions seriously. Most of all, do not let your child say side comments when you are telling him what to do.

You need to be firm in disciplining your child without resorting to verbal abuse. Giving him direct statements is the best way in letting your child value respect and rules. Explain to him clearly that there are rules and that there will be consequences if he refuses to follow.

Its’ also a good way to let him know that in every rule to follow there is a corresponding consequence, be that following the rule or breaking it. Whatever the outcome is, he must be responsible enough to face the consequences.

There are several ways that you can show your child your parental authority. And giving direct and clear statements is one of the most effective. But if your child is oppositional defiant, there are other more specific ones that you can try.
