Discussing Angioedema Treatment
Angioedema Treatment: Treatments for angioedema can be classified into four basic categories which makes it easier to define appropriate treatments. Each is effective against one condition type. The types of angioedema are allergic angioedema, drug induced angioedema, hereditary angioedema, and acquired angioedema.
Treatment: Treatment varies depending upon which type of symptoms the patient is experiencing:
Allergic angioedema: strict avoidance of the allergen and use of antihistamines/steroid therapy to aid in the alleviation of symptoms.
Drug induced angioedema requires that the drug that caused the reaction be identified and discontinued right away before the condition worsens. To alleviate symptoms further drug therapy should be administered, but closely monitored for adverse effects.
Hereditary angioedema treatment requires that the individual avoid the stimuli that caused the reaction. This will decrease or eliminate future episodes of the condition. Drug therapy can also be effective.
Drug therapy is the only appropriate treatment for acquired angioedema. It should be closely monitored to ensure that any adverse effects are caught and rectified immediately.
Some cases may not require treatment. In some instances cool compresses or soaks can provide relief from pain and discomfort. Any breathing difficulty classifies it as an emergency condition.
Medications used to effectively used as treatment include: antihistamines, corticosteroids, Tagamet, epinephrine, bronchodilators, etc. For relief from breathing difficulty individuals should immediately seek medical aid. In a hospital setting a tube may be placed in the throat in order to keep the airway open and relieve the breathing difficulty.
Summary: Patients undergoing Angioedema Treatment should always be monitored closely. Drug treatments can have adverse effects. Some even having the possibility to exacerbate the symptoms making the condition escalate to even more uncomfortable and/or dangerous levels. If a patient feels any worsening of symptoms or experiences any new discomfort, a physician should be consulted immediately. It is important to discuss family history, past problems and previous history with allergy problems.
