Don’t Wait To Quit Smoking, Start Today!
Smoking is addictive, and trying to quit is equally difficult. Smokers would agree, since at one point of time in their life they would have had the will power to quit, even if it was for a few days. There are several products in the market today that claim to get rid of this dreadful habit, does it work? We don’t know yet, unless you know someone who’s successfully tried it. Until then you have to rely on what the hoardings claim.
Consult Your Physician-The next thing that I recommend that you do would be to talk to your Dr and come up with a game plan that is right for you. Perhaps you will use a nicotine replacement therapy such as patches or gum. Or maybe you will use medication such as Wellbutrin or Zyban. Either way it is important to have your Doctor aware of your decision to quit as they can definitely help you in your quest to becoming a former smoker.
The time you choose to quit smoking should not be on days that are stressful, holidays or before you’re up for a presentation, this will only induce the urge. Instead pick on a day that is of significance, like your birthday, anniversary or New Years (although I do know several who haven’t been able to stick to their New Year resolutions). When you’re preparing to quit smoking, get rid of every item that is related to smoking like ashtrays, matches, lighters etc from your work desk as well as from home. Most importantly if your on medications get yourself checked by your doctor and let him know that you are going to quit smoking. He should let you know if there would be any effects caused by the medications; also he would be in the right position to prescribe something for your withdrawal effects.
To relax and get through the worst times when quitting smoking, learn to relax your body and your mind by taking deep breaths. Take ten deep, slow breaths and then hold the last one. Breathe out slowly, and then relax all your muscles. Picture a pleasant and soothing scene, to help you get away from everything, even if only for a moment. Think about your peaceful image and nothing else. You can also light a candle or incense instead of a cigarette.
Smoking is physical act, your hands and your lips are involved in it. They therefore get accustomed to it, if you feel like these type of cravings, head for a toothpick, lollipop sunflower seeds, mint, chewing gum etc this should help you quit smoking. The major change you need to make is within yourself if you want to quit smoking. Identify activities that would accompany you while smoking, like drinking coffee, after meals, when in stress etc. this should help you predict when you’re craving would begin and you can take control of it. Exercise also helps a lot, it gets the clean blood flowing and is a great diversion.
