Mesothelioma cases and the money involved
I always takes two. We all heard and were astonished when we learned about another case were a person who had gotten Mesothelioma as a result of working with the material on his job, and now was compensated by his former employer for his suffering as the court issued a ruling accordingly.
Do you remember that case just a few months back ago? There was a company in Georgia who was ordered to pay out close to $ 100 Million Dollars in asbestos settlement compensation fees. That company decided to countersue his health care professionals and associated laboratories of fraud.
It is not unprecedented that defendant in asbestos cases start firing back over to the other side. However, this approach also bears a risk within. There was a case back in 1995 or 1996 where a relatively large company sued a laboratory that specializes in asbestos testing, but was eventually forced to settle in a confidentiality agreement which called compensating for other pending asbestos claims.
And probably all of us heard of other things, like lawyers bribing doctors or hospital staff members in order to obtain tweaked reports which they could then use in their cases to their favor, too.
It’s important to see and understand the whole situation. Keep in mind: 40 out of a 1000 formerly employed workers of the asbestos production industry – or in workplaces that naturally come with a high exposure to the material – will get a severe lung disease such as cancer or Mesothelioma.
And each asbestos related claim is estimated to cost an average of $ 52,000. A big portion of that money goes straight to attorney fees, as you can imagine. It’s good business. Some say with a sense of sarcasm: “Mesothelioma cases – or any asbestos related case for that matter- became a lucrative enterprise.”
I know what I’m talking about. I was diagnosed with Renal Cell Carcinoma (kidney cancer) in October of 2009. Seven months before that, my wife receive her breast cancer diagnosis. We are lucky to have relatively good health care insurance plan coverage. However, we still end up with monthly out of pocket expenses that are regularly over $ 4,000.
I mention this because it upsets me, that because of some ruthless and greedy people, we as the people cant’ get a hold of our medical costs. It doesn’t matter if you have Mesothelioma or any other cancer, or diabetes or just a bad cold. We all have to deal with the astronomically high costs for drugs and medical treatment.
And because of those individuals who by their conduct generate more and more costs for lawyers, court fees, etc., our medical expenses continue to rise. And I had it with that. I can only speak for myself, but I guess you get my point.
