The Pleural Cavity And Pleurisy

In human anatomy, the lungs are surrounded by the pleural cavity. Basically this cavity is the space created between two layers of pleura. The pleura folds over itself to make this space which contains some pleural fluid. The outer layer is called the parietal pleura and the inner layer is referred to as the visceral pleura. Parietal pleurae are attached to the chest wall, or thoracic wall. Visceral pleurae cover the lungs as well as bronchi, blood vessels and nerves.

The pleural cavity is essential for proper breathing. The pleurae are provided with a lubricant by the pleural fluid which allows them to move against each other during inhalation and exhalation. The fluid also controls the expansion and inflation of the alveoli with each breath. Further, the chest wall movements are controlled here. This is especially essential during times of heavy breathing.

In a normal, healthy person, there are always a few milliliters of fluid inside this intra-pleural space. It is constantly being produced and then absorbed by the lymphatic system. When too much accumulates, there is a problem that must be identified.

One such problem is pleurisy. Too much fluid will cause inflammation of the cavity. Infection by a virus is the main cause of pleurisy. Other causes are bacteria, fungi, parasites, blood clots in the lungs, chest injuries, pneumothorax (too much air in the chest) and other lung diseases.

The big symptom of pleurisy is a sharp pain in the chest, especially with breathing, coughing and sneezing. Other symptoms could be a cough, fever, shortness of breath, shallow breathing, sore throat and even weight loss. Proper medical examination is necessary to correctly identify pleurisy as well as its underlying cause. Some of these tests are blood tests, chest x-rays, CT scans, and ultrasound. If cancer is suspected, a biopsy may be done.

When treating pleurisy, one will want to not only treat the pleurisy itself but also the cause. Often, attempts will be made to drain the pleural fluid. If the fluid is infected, antibiotics or antifungal treatments will be given. Most often, ibuprofen will be advised. While treatment is in progress, it is important to cough regularly to clear out mucus. A build up of mucus can lead to pneumonia. Getting plenty of rest is also advised.

Further complications as well as death are always a concern if pleurisy is not treated properly and as soon as possible. Several noted pleurisy related deaths are documented throughout history. Benjamin Franklin was a victim of it and died at 84. William Henry Harrison, 9th president of the United States died from pleurisy that developed from pneumonia after a cold went untreated. He was in office for only 31 days. Other famous related deaths include Charlemagne, Karl Marx, Francis Scott Key and Anna Pavlova. Gladly, medicines and processes for treating pleurisy are effective and readily available.

As stated, pleurisy is most often a sign of another serious condition. In some cases, an underlying cause cannot be determined. But when the causing factor is known, proper treatment is essential for healthy lungs.
