Fibromyalgia Pain Relief- Treatment Focused on Symptoms
Fibromyalgia (FM) is characterized by the widespread distribution of pain all throughout the body and is chronic. Apart from the pain that the disorder is inflicting, FM will also inflict easy fatigability to the individual as well as sleep disturbances. It was originally thought to be of musculoskeletal origin because the pain occurs on most muscles, bones, ligaments and tendons.
However, some researches showed that the CNS or the central nervous system is involved in the disease process. The involvement of the CNS results to the abnormal pain mechanism that enhances the pain sensation. This will make the entire situation even worse.
The fact that it is not that easy to diagnose the disease makes it very challenging for medical professionals today. Using diagnostic tools such as laboratory tests and x-rays is not enough to diagnose that there is a presence of FM. A diagnosis can only be made through the presence of multiple tender focal points throughout the body.
The widespread pain that the patient will feel is the hallmark of the disease but the diagnosis must be after other medical condition has been ruled out. Many doctors are already assuming about the many causes of FM and the triggering factors as well. Sometimes, the significant lack of appropriate sleep can trigger the incidence of this disorder even though it has always been thought of as one of the symptoms.
There will be flare ups as well as increasing in the incidence of sleep disturbances, which will create the vicious cycle. As a result, the patients will suffer from extensive deficiency of adequate rest. This however needs further research before exact answers are found.
Most treatment is focused on alleviating the pain that the disorder is causing. Currently, pain medications to fibromyalgia are effective. The medications range from antidepressants, narcolepsy drugs, anticonvulsants, and OTC and prescription analgesics as well as sleep aids. All of these medications will help you help you with pain, sleep and alleviate anxiety and depression.
