So Many Panic Attacks Treatments – What Actually Works?

Panic attacks – what exactly are they and do you think you may suffer from them? Well a panic attack is when your mind and body overreact and panic often for no apparent reason. Everyone panics at some stage in their life, that is perfectly normal and is needed during dangerous situations. However, it’s when you panic for no reason at all that it means you are having a panic attack.

The cause of panic attacks may vary from person to person but there is usually a lot of stress, anxiety or depression in a persons life leading up to the beginning of panic attacks. When a person does experience an attack it can be awfully frightening and fear of having another attack is enough to bring on further attacks.

Symptoms of panic attacks are difficulty breathing, dizziness a racing heart and more. The good news is that panic disorder is treatable and it is possible to overcome it completely. The sooner you begin treatment the sooner you can get your life back.

Panic disorder develops when a person suffers from recurring panic attacks which is very common once a person has had one attack. When the attacks are occuring regularly and are having a big negative affect on your life, then you have panic disorder.

The treatment you may choose for your panic attacks might depend on your personal views and whether you prefer to use medication or a more natural approach. Some medications can help to a certain extent but will not get rid of the problem completely. Therapies have known to be quite successful in treating panic attacks and also some more natural treatments such as meditation and relaxation therapy can also be very effective.

Medications like Benzodiazepines, Xanax, Klonopin and Ativan are anti-anxiety medications which can help to reduce the symptoms of panic attacks as well as general anxiety which can help reduce panic. These medications can be quite addictive and should be used with caution and in accordance with your doctors instructions. Antidepressants can also be used to help with panic attacks by improving your general happiness which won’t eliminate panic attacks but can help reduce them and recude the severity of them.

One of the most successful panic attacks treatment is cognitive behavioural therapy as this treatment gets right to the core of the problem. This therapy delves into your mind and tries to find the cause of your attacks, you might have to discuss your fears and anxieties to be able to deal with them and move on. This therapy will teach you how to deal with your fears and also how to deal with the way that your mind reacts during a panic attack. Basically you are retraining your mind to react differently and more rationally.

Exposure therapy involves placing the patient in a situation where they would normally experience a panic attack. This is done in a controlled environement and they are taught how to face that situation rationally and confront it so as to reduce the fear of that situation and hopefully eliminate future attacks when faced with the same situation.

Alternative therapies like meditation, relaxation therapy and even yoga are a great way to deal with your panic disorder. Yoga can help with many ailments and does wonders for mental conditions like panic attacks. Yoga helps to calm the mind and body and relieve stress. As stress can play a large role in panic disorder, reducing stress can also play a large role in overcoming the disorder.

Some people may only need one of these treatments, but many will find a combination of some of the treatments works very well. Medication on it’s own is not a good treatment as although it may reduce the symptoms, it is not addressing the problem and therefore not helping to overcome panic disorder completely. So if you are using medication I do suggest that you combine it with some sort of therapy to get the best results.
