Some Information on Depression Medication

These days there is no excuse to suffer sadness alone as many clinical professionals such as cognitive behavioral therapists and psychiatrists can help with the problem. Medical science has moved on a great deal with a number of depression treatments now possible plus depression medications that are likely to make the condition more bearable if not cure it completely.

Fortunately depression can now be cured, especially when diagnosed early and depressed individuals can actually be treated through therapy and medication, although it may be a bit costly. It is now understood that cognitive behavioral and interpersonal therapy can be very successful at helping sufferers of depression as they actually attack the root of the problem.

Both actually produce fruitful and positive results even for just short-term sessions of around ten to twenty weeks and are almost always enough to get a depression patient started on their recovery towards a sound mental health. The first step is making an appointment with a doctor who specializes in this type of problem and who has a good track record to enable an accurate diagnosis of just what type of depression the patient is actually suffering from. Your doctor will be able to recommend what type of treatment and depression medication required as they do differ considerably and no-one wants to make the situation worse. There is actually a surprisingly wide variety of medications available to help treat those who are suffering from depressive disorders.

The more popular ones are those that are of the selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors then there are the tricyclics while the other popular variant is the monoamine oxidase inhibitor. The last thing you want when taking medication is to feel worse. Often, the doctor will actually mix the medications if it will help the patient. If the doctor believes it will benefit the patient he will use as many of the drugs together as he believes necessary.

If the doctor feels it will help he may raise or lower the dosage of the medication he has prescribed in order to best meet the patient’s personal requirement. Patients taking depression medication are always warned not to try this for themselves as it something only a qualified professional should do. The patient must also learn that sedatives and other anti-anxiety medications are not anti-depressant drugs and should not be used as substitutes. The problem occurs where they are given as part of the treatment with other drugs and may be confused with anti-depressants, which is not the case as the problem they deal with is more defined.

Used only to help relax the patient, it means that any other depression medication should still be used as prescribed. The tricyclic medication group is responsible for a number of the most notable side-effects.

In severe cases, the sufferer may not even be able to function properly and it is at this pint that thus type of drug would be withdrawn and replaced by another. Side effects that cause problems should always be reported so a safer alternative can be prescribed without delay.
