Initially it was thought that diabetic people need to follow a specific diet but later learning more about it revealed that diabetic people can eat all foods by following specific guidelines. Diabetes is mainly due to high level of glucose in the body. This high level of glucose is due to absence or low quantity of insulin in the body. Insulin is a hormone secreted by pancreas. Pancreas consists of group of cells which are collectively called as islet of langerhans. Among these cells the beta cells are responsible for secretion of insulin. Pancreas is a gland present behind the stomach.
Diabetes is divided into two main categories type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is known as autoimmune disease as here the autoimmune system of the body is destroys the beta cells of the pancreas. Also it called juvenile and early onset diabetes.
Type 2 diabetes is mainly to adults of age 40 and above. So it is called as adult onset diabetes. In type 2 diabetes the acceptors of the cells stop reacting to the insulin produced and due to this the pancreas create more and more insulin vigorously and develops a resistance to itself which is called as insulin resistance.
The other major type of diabetes is gestational diabetes which is to women during the second phase of pregnancy. Women with gestational diabetes are at risk of having large babies. The good thing about gestational diabetes is that it last only till the delivery if proper care is taken by the mother. In ignored cases it leads to type 2 diabetes.
