Loss Of Hair – New Treatments With Good Success Rates
No one wants to lose their hair. A few extra hairs on the brush in the morning can cause panic in anyone. Causes are many and, till recently, cures were expensive and painful; or worse, useless. However, there’s good news. Loss of hair doesn’t need to cause the anxiety and dread it used to.
Most baldness in men is due to a lack of the production of a hormone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT), obviously a form of testosterone, known for its hair producing abilities. There’s no pill to replace it or turn on its production again, but there are ways to slow down how quickly it goes away.
Hair loss can also be caused by medications with this particular side effect. A long, severe illness can produce significant hair loss as well. When we are really sick, mother nature tends to send all our vitamins and to vital organs like the brain and heart. Even though hair follicles need these same vitamins and nutrient, mother nature isn’t terribly concerned about these. And of course, anyone who has undergone even one round of chemotherapy will attest to how quickly hair falls out afterwards.
Researchers, scientists, and professional inventors have concocted cures, treatments, and quack remedies for centuries. Sometimes one of these “cures” actually produced some noticeable results. Most, however, did nothing more than make a few bucks for whoever was doing the advertising.
The successful treatments are varied. Between creams and shampoos and oils that need to be rubbed into the scalp, and light treatments, laser treatments, and pills, there is something for everyone. The quacks have their own offerings which include herbs, forms of meditation, hypnosis, and ideas that border on medieval alchemy.
Years ago all we had to replace hair was a hair transplant. They were expensive, and very painful. Complications were all too common. Hair plugs would become infected and either fall out or need to be surgically removed either right away or a few months later. Long term success was hit or miss. Surgery improved over the years and these new procedures helped to reduce post op discomfort, they were less expensive, and long term success increased. However, it was still a surgical procedure with the same risks as before.
Talk to your doctor and find out why you are going bald. He needs to find out if it’s a serious problem or just a hormone imbalance. If it’s a problem that can be treated, your hair will end up growing back on its own once the problem is addressed.
If the doctor finds no pathology to deal with, he may recommend staring with procedures that carry a low risk threshold – ointments and pills. After charting your results he may suggest something more intense depending on your response to the treatments you have been using.
Before deciding on a surgical solution such as a full blown transplant, discuss the pros and cons with either your doctor or a board certified dermatologist with this type of experience. Don’t just head to a hair transplant center asking for advice. No one gets turned away. Be safe, be careful. It’s not dying over a few strands of hair!
