Alzheimer’s Patients & Summertime Heat Strokes

Traveling for medical care abroad can bring along its own host of affiliated issues. One such concern when traveling for medical care abroad are heat illnesses.

The results and consequences can be startling as well as damaging indeed. Involved with the results of heat stroke are causal and causation factors such as body temperature and temperatures, fluid intake and salt (sodium) intake and consumption. Despite much work and medical research the fundamental and basic reasons why only some ( a minority or a few people or subjects indeed) ,cross from the common malaise of standard yet simple “heat exhaustion” to real life threatening conditions of heat-stroke remained poorly understood or explained by medical science to any good or great degree.

What of heat stroke? First be reassured that while heat exhaustion is common, real serious casualties and even death from heat stroke is rare. Most people if they feel very very hot will stop exercising (if they are foolish to do such a thing in a most hot environment), and will automatically seek a cooler environment, drink and liquids.

What is the treatment for such dehydration and dehydration in general? Rapid treatment is the order of the day. First of all cooling is helpful. If in the sun, the affected person or patient should be removed to the shade and a cool place. Airs conditioned quarters are obviously best. Take water to the dehydrated person not the other way around. Give as much water and fluids as possible. Some people like to drink coffee, teas or standard soft drinks such as colas sodas. This is not a wise idea. Tea, coffee and cola soft drinks – even though the person may like the flavor, or tea / coffee drinking are social habits and ingest greater amounts of these drinks, are not a wise idea. Tea and coffee are net diuretics that are they will cause the body and its circulatory systems overall increase the elimination of water from the body, not retention. Thus the best thing overall is to drink simple water, along with perhaps salt tablets or an increase of table salt in food and meals.

The answer to these issues are increased intakes of fluids such as water , soft drinks , tea or coffee along with an increased ingestion of salt – whether it be by food or standard salt tablets. For your health and the health of others it is just as simple as that.
